Sliding Puzzle

Classic 8-tile puzzle: slide pieces into the empty space until the numbers run 1 through 8 from top-left to bottom-right.

Play sliding puzzle

Tap a tile next to the gap to move it.

How to play

  • Only tiles orthogonal to the empty cell (up, down, left, or right) can slide—never diagonally.
  • Each tap swaps that neighbour with the empty space.
  • Goal: 1–3 on the top row, 4–6 on the middle, 7–8 on the bottom, with the gap at the bottom-right.
  • New puzzle reshuffles using only legal moves, so every layout stays solvable.

Game description

The sliding puzzle sets eight numbered tiles and one empty slot on a three-by-three tray. You may only move a tile that sits next to the gap along a row or column—never diagonally—so every shuffle is a walk through legal slides rather than a cheaty teleport. The goal is an ordered layout with one through eight in place and the hole resting in the bottom-right corner. Reaching that tidy grid is pure rearrangement logic where planning three moves ahead beats frantic tapping. The blank square is the real piece you steer through the crowd, not the numbers themselves.

Tap a neighbor of the empty cell to swap it into the gap. New puzzle reshuffles with only valid moves, so every layout stays solvable and dead ends never strand you. Touch targets stay large enough for thumbs, and mouse users get the same clarity on wider screens. Reset without shame when you notice the same pair cycling; fresh starts keep practice productive instead of stubborn grinding. Skills sharpened here—reading order, spotting loops, and pacing moves—show up whenever you reorganize anything under tight constraints.
